  • Ceiling Fan from Switch that controls outlet but only 1 set of wires?

    posted by: jamivdb

I went to run a new ceiling fan line from an existing switch in the bedroom that controls the bottom of the outlets. I have done this a couple of other times and usually there are 2 sets of wires coming into the box but this switch box only has one set (black, white, ground). Is there any way to run the ceiling fan from this switch since it only has 1 set of wires? In the other rooms we added a 2nd switch and that was what we were planning on doing here. I don't really care if the outlets stay switched or not I really just want to be able to power the light from here. I am running the cable from the ceiling fan to the switch on the outside of the ceiling and wall using conduit. I do not have access to look in an attic or anything as it is a condo with concrete ceilings. If I have to settle for having the ceiling fan and outlets controlled at the same time that would be ok as long as the ceiling fan and light work.

Yes you can but the receptacles have to become not switched.
You need to find the receptacle that has the switch cable going to it.
Here is an explanation. You are going to be using conversion option #2.
