How can I determine how much wattage my computer needs? I have a computer that the power supply went bad. I have a 250 watt supply. How do I determine if it is big enough? The one I removed was 300 watt. There is nothing special in this machine for gaming etc. I looked on a hard drive and based on the volts and amps it uses about 12 watts. Does that sound right?

250W should cover most non-gaming, non-graphic design setups. If you look up your MB specs it should tell you something. Most of the stuff in the case add very litle power draw. Power usage by motherboards and 3.5" hdd's are dropping with technology advances. I have a Intel Atom based mini system that I am setting up as a mini-Linux server. It uses about 40 watts total.

If it is overloaded is it going to take out the power supply or is there built in overload protection that will reset when turned off?
